Multilingual, Multimodal, and Multidisciplinary: Deaf Students and Translanguaging in Content Area Classes

Translanguaging is an approach to the education of multilingual students that has been gaining in popularity recent years. defined as use multiple languages and modalities during classroom instruction with express purpose encouraging teaching all their linguistic resources make sense content demonstrate understanding. Though there a great deal research on translanguaging general, this article focuses two less-studied areas for translanguaging: intersection deaf area education. Here, authors explore literature available domains science, students, science classrooms students. Using findings from these articles, present four recommendations teachers who want engage students: First, can both signed language English (or other written languages) expose essential concepts languages. Next, discipline subject-specific words, well colloquial meanings similar words (e.g., evidence versus fact proof American Sign Language). Additionally, should attempt be visually oriented while translanguaging. Finally, we recommend encourage respond questions or prompts using and/or modalities. Implications each recommendation are explored.
